The Northwest Cricket Club (formerly the Gresham Cricket Club) is a multi-national
team that was formed in 2000 and is a founding team of the Oregon Cricket League (OCL).
In 2000, the following 4 - Andalib Khan, Ameer Mohamed, Yaseer Farooqi
and Mujahid Shahzad) left Beaverton Cricket Club and formed a club of our
own. We named it Gresham Cricket Club. All of the founding members except
Andalib Khan (currently playing OCL-2008), including the players who played
for the initial GCC moved out of town. Ameer is still in Portland, however.
Back then we used to play in the North West Cricket League (NWCL)
and had to travel to Seattle every other week. It became very hectic for
most of the folks in Oregon and we decided to start a local league of our
own. In 2004 we started the Oregon Cricket League. Khurram Khan from our
team and Raiyo Aspandiar where the main driving force behind organizing this
local league.NWCC focuses on full participation from team members, including consistent opportunities
to perform and cooperation on making our seasons successful in terms of winning but as
much in terms of personal fulfillment.
In 2005, as we eventually got tired of travelling to Seattle, WA every
weekend to play in NWCL, we along with other clubs in Oregon (MCC and BCC)
helped establish our own local cricket league - OCL (Oregon Cricket League).
In 2008 GCC (Gresham Cricket Club) was named NWCC (North-West Cricket
Club) to better reflect the fact that our club members are not limited to
Gresham but they come from the entire Greater Portland Metro Area (Portland,
Beaverton, Gresham and Hillsboro). We pride our mulitnationality and
diversity and so far have members from Sri Lanka, Pakistan,
Bangladesh,
South Africa, India, the U.S., and Afghanistan.
NWCC has recently completed all of its OCL (Oregon Cricket League) 20:20
matches. Currently, we are playing the regular OCL regular season.
We have many ambitions for the future, some of which can be listed as
follows: -
- Making the game of cricket more common in the northwest and may be
leading OCL (Oregon Cricket League) to a level where we can even get
sponsors.
- Becoming a more diverse club. Currently, the club has members from
Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and South Africa.
- Organizing and attention social games with neighboring aspiring cricket
playing countries. Canada would be the one to start with.
- Having a regular training/practice session: 2 days/week.
